Tools and Hardware Reviews of Mr Heater MH18B Portable "Big Buddy" Heater

Customer Review: Great for the garage
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this heater to run in the garage during the winter when I wash my car. The heater has no problem heating the garage into the sixties when on full heat. Once the garage is warm, I can maintain the heat at the half setting. I have a standard double car garage to heat. As others have mentioned, the fan doesn't really work that well, but I'm not standing next to it anyway. The purpose of the unit is to heat the room and it does that fine. The only thing I didn't like about it was that the installation of the batteries was difficult. The unit takes two rows of batteries and the springs for the 1st row of batteries gets in the way of installing the second row. They should of staggered the batteries or put them side-by-side. Other than that, this unit works great.

Customer Review: how i like my heater
Summary: 5 Stars

i love the heater very much. when i have it on, my furance never kicks on. it is well worth its money. i bought another brand from another company. and did not like it at all. when it was on my furance still kicked on.which was no good for me . if my furance still kicked on i didn't need the heater.this one i really like. how i got it was a friend had bought a small one and a big one ,but didn't have the big one on. only the small was lit. and i throught if the little one does that good, than the big one should do lot better. i called lowe's and they had sold out and was not getting anymore in his year, why i don't know it was still winter, so i got on the internet and ordered one.thank god for the internet.i am going to get a outside tank for it next year.

Customer Review: BIG BUDDY IS MY BUDDY
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this heater a month ago to heat my garage 20x32 just over 600 sq ft well insulated. So far i have gone through about two 20# cylnders running the heat at least every night for 2-3 hours and on weekends 6-7 hours a day. The temp in the garage has never dropped below 35 deg, and from there it warms up to 50-55 degrees in about an hour running on high makes it warm enough to work. I have an ac adapter from radio shack pretty inexpensive less than $10.

All in all i would highly recommend the Big Buddy heater it works great with throw aways although you throw away more than empty cylnders compared to a 20# cylnder. I last bought a 40# cylnder, if that gets me through a month that is reasonable enough to get through the winter.

Customer Review: Handy Heater
Summary: 4 Stars

The portable Big Buddy puts out plenty of heat. We use it in a family room and it really takes the chill off on a cold morning. The three heat settings are handy and on days that aren't real cold, the low setting is plenty. The fan is a nice feature and allows one to direct the warm air. It is a little noisy though.

The heater is a nice compact size. We use it with a large propane tank, which is probably a good idea if you don't want to be changing tanks often. It also has some very good safety features such as the low oxygen shutoff sensor and a feature that shuts it off if it gets knocked off.

We are very satisfied with this product. I would have given it five stars if not for the slightly noisy fan.

Customer Review: not all it should be
Summary: 3 Stars

we live in alaska. This was to be used to heat a cabin on our property. bad bad bad idea.

The heater is great until you deal with our level of cold. Let me say that it worked great in our home when our regular heater went out. It kept us warm and in good shape until we had our main heater repaired.

For the cabin it was not so good. Seems that this heater fails to work at temps under or near zero. Fireballs due to valve failures at these temps make it very dangerous and obviously not very reliable for very cold environments. Long as it is not exposed to temps near zero you are fine. But it failed for the use we needed. It is now our backup heater for the house so it is not a total loss. It functions well there.
