Tools and Hardware Reviews of Mr. Heater 80,000 BTU Propane Convection Heater #MH80CVCustomer Review: 30-80K Portable Propane Convection Heater Summary: 5 Stars
I use the Mr. Heater 30-80K convection heater in my garage, which is roughly 625 SF with high 14 ft. ceilings, CMU block wall, un-insulated ceiling. During winter months of the teens outside, I can bring the inside temp of my garage up to 70 degrees within a short time. However, you may need to hang a box fan up near the ceiling or install a ceiling fan to circulate the heat back down, it puts out a strong trickle of heat in a 360 degree radius that is easy to regulate to keep from alternating between freezing and roasting.
The biggest plus for me with this unit it the lack of objectionable fumes as are produced by forced air kerosene heaters, the propane burns clean and is easy to purchase at my local filling station, no spills or lugging around 5 gallon containers of kerosene.
If massive amounts of heat are what you want, you should consider the forced air propane heater made by Mr. Heater. They put out massive quantities of heat in short order.
I get about 15 hours of use per 25 pound propane tank, the same type my BBQ runs on, by turning this unit on high and then shutting it down to low, alternating this cycle. You can use upwards of a 100 pound propane tank.
The unit is much smaller then I expected which is a plus, it is light and very well made and simple to use.
Customer Review: A savior for cold tailgates Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this heater back in early November when we were anticipating a cold PA day for tailgating. We expected it to be a little cold and windy, and we had a little 8,000 BTU Mr Heater Buddy that has never quite done the trick other than barely keeping extremities warm. After reading a bunch of reviews, I was left trying to decide if I wanted forced air or this convection heater. I've only been around one forced air heater before and it was EXTREMELY noisy, so I was hoping that a convection heater wouldn't be as bad.
After the heater arrived, it took a few minutes to setup and we put it out in the garage for a test spin. I immediately put it up to high to see how loud it would be at the highest setting and I was pleasantly surprised how quiet it was. I'm not sure what some of the other reviews are talking about but the noise is barely over a whisper and wouldn't affect speaking levels even as you're standing right next to it. Any setting below maximum and there is little-to-no noise whatsoever.
We set it up the next day for our tailgate, placed it under a pair of 10x10 tents connected with walls and it was fantastic. It kept everyone very comfortable especially as the wind picked up. You feel a little like a bum around a trashcan but it kept us all nice and warm. 5*
Customer Review: Heats 3 car insulated garage really well Summary: 4 Stars
This product is terrific! Yes, there is some water / humidity increase in the air as a result of the combustion of propane to fire, but for running it a few hours at a time while working on the car, cleaning the garage, etc., it's fine. There is virtually no odor (some the first time it burns) and when on High it heats the room up to working temp (i'll guess 65 - 70+ degrees when it's darn cold outside 10 - 20 degrees) in 10 - 15 minutes. As for the noise that other people report, it really isn't that loud. Yes, you can hear the heater running, but especially when it's running on anything than full high, it's quite tolerable; turn the radio on and you can hardly hear it.
I give it 4/5 stars only because the lid is able to slide up and down - making it easier to store and travel. But the little tabs that snap in to hold it in place can be a little tricky to get them to "pop" after the first few uses just because the aluminum is by nature flexible. So I leave mine always fully extended, but still store it in the original box, just with the box open on top and foam still covering it up. I also kept the original packing pieces for the regulator and hose connections to keep them covered when not in use.
For about $100 you can't beat this product.
Customer Review: Great heater for a pole barn Summary: 5 Stars
Bought this heater for my 30'x45' pole barn. I used it to heat it for a Halloween party and it worked very well. It was in the low 30's outside but kept well into the upper 60's inside. My barn is not insulated and is drafty. I placed it inside a playpen fence arranged in a large square to keep kids out and put it off to the side in the back of the barn. I hung a box fan in the rafters pointed down to circulate the warm air. I used one 20lb. propane cylinders in 5 hours mostly on medium. I had it on high for the first couple hours to get things warmed up.
For the price of the heater and convenience of propane I think this is a definite bargain way to heat a barn. I used a kerosene salamander before but the fumes were awful. This heater burns clean without the smell. The noise is not bad at all. If you are having a party, you won't even notice it over the people talking. When I'm by myself in the wood shop I can hear the stereo just fine.
Just a word of caution. Even though this burns without noticeable fumes (you will smell fumes during the initial use as the new paint or coatings get burned off) remember that this does use up oxygen. If your area is well sealed you could reduce the amount of oxygen in the room.
Customer Review: Better than I expected Summary: 5 Stars
The heater arrived quickly, and with no damage or problems.
Heats our garage (about 20' x 20') within 15 minutes, even when it's below freezing outside, although it has rarely been turned up to its higher setting.
There are two things I wish I could change about this heater, and they are small things. First, I wish it had the "new" type of connection to the propane cylinder, the type that can be screwed on by hand rather than having to use tools. Second, I wish it had a lower "low" setting, which would make the gas last longer. I have no complaints with the gas consumption, though. It lasts longer than I had expected. We had a party on a cold night, and the heater stayed on in the garage for smokers' comfort. A 20-lb (BBQ grill-size) propane tank lasted through the party, and then through several more approximately-thirty-minute sessions since then. We have a patio heater that also uses this type of tank, so we have three cylinders, one of which is a spare for whichever heater runs out of fuel. It's a good arrangement, and has made our lives better by increasing our comfortable living space. I highly recommend this heater.
